Updating a Legacy Education System

OVERVIEW.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

The project was undertaken for ESCO Institute, which is a leading HVACR education and certification provider. The segment is Education and e-Commerce.

PROBLEM

ESCO Institute faced challenges due to operational slowdowns caused by legacy systems. They initiated a two-year project to modernize its education platform and streamline internal and certification processes. The core problem was transforming a complex legacy system into a single, integrated platform.

TEAM AND TIMELINE

Guilherme Theodoro's role was Lead Product Designer for 12 months of this project, specifically from June 2023 to June 2024. He was responsible for discovery, user testing, design, and team management. The team involved a Product Design Lead, UX designers, and developers. The project lasted one year and three months, from November 2024 to February 2025.

SOLUTION

ESCO Institute embarked on a two-year initiative to modernize its education platform and streamline internal and certification processes, driven by operational slowdowns caused by legacy systems.

The solution involved consolidating 13 legacy systems into 4 unified platforms. Guilherme led the product discovery phase, which included conducting user research, creating user journeys, and personas. He also led the UX design process, which encompassed brainstorming, wireframing, prototyping, and design specifications. He managed and mentored the design team. The outcome was a unified, web-based solution that significantly enhanced usability and incorporated numerous automations to boost performance and workflow.

IMPACT

The project achieved significant success, resulting in increased student engagement, improved proctor evaluations, and a significant rise in certifications issued. This, in turn, enhanced student satisfaction and strengthened the institution's brand within the HVACR industry. The project also significantly increased student satisfaction and reduced certification time.
